A Family Business Since 1962
In 1962, the business was founded by Ruth Shannon. The business was originally called Shannon's Homemade Candies. The basement of the family home in Jackson Township, PA became the kitchen for all candy production. Loyal customers would come to the family home through out the year and purchase their favorite chocolates.
In October of 1978, the business had out grown the family home and was relocated to Mercer, PA. A former gas station was remodeled to the present state to accommodate the business. At this time, the name was changed to Shannon's Kandy Kitchen. Since the chocolates were no longer manufactured in the home, the homemade candies portion of the name was dropped. The "K" in Kandy represents the family joke that few in the family spell well. The Kitchen portion is to remember the humble beginning of starting in the family home.
To expand the business, Ruth took to the road during the summer months. Since the weather was too warm for chocolates, Ruth would make a variety of fudge flavors in copper kettles. The concession trailer still continues to visit many of the same fairs in addition to local festivals and events.
In 2001, Ruth retired and her son, Larry, and his wife, Debbie, took over the business. Through these years, the business had continued to grow and Debbie opened the second location in Slippery Rock, PA in 2007. In 2014, their daughter, Amanda, opened the third location in Grove City, PA. The Slippery Rock and Grove City locations are retail only.
Larry still uses the copper kettles and family recipes to make the chocolate centers as Ruth did in the beginning. We continue to strive for perfection and uphold the family values. We are fortunate to say "We live a sweet life!"
